What is Cholesterol? Understanding its Nature!

by Dane Masters

If you are wondering why you have high cholesterol and what is cholesterol anyway. We have here tried to explain it to you in lay-mans terms. This is not easily done, but might give you an indication of how and why these cholesterol levels should be lowered. Similar to not needing to know how the internal combustion engine works, in order to drive a car, you really don’t need to understand what cholesterol actually is. But we believe it might enlighten you to some degree, and at least if someone asks you “what is cholesterol?” You will have the answer ready for them!

One way of answering the question, what is cholesterol? Is to look at it from an organic chemistry point of view, although this might appear complex to a lay person, it is really quite easily understood. Cholesterol is an aerobic chemical compound that is hydrophobic in nature. Still sounds complex doesn’t it?

Cholesterol is not all bad, it is absolutely vital to the existence of any animal; this includes us humans. The cell membranes of the human body have to remain fluid and flexible, unlike that of a plant. Plant cell membranes are rigid and have no flexibility. This is where cholesterol comes to the fore, this substance keeps the cell membranes of the animal flexible. The cell membranes of an animal/human consist of two layers of lipids. Both lipid cell layers have a head and a tail, these are hydrophilic and the head aligns with the watery exterior and interior of the cell while the tail aligns in the relatively water free centre of the cell. Cholesterol, travels between these two layers of lipids, keeping the membranes elastic. Kind of like a layer of oil between the surface of a piston ring and sleeve.

From this we conclude that the presence of cholesterol is vital to the life of an animal. Cholesterol is carried through the body on lipoprotein carriers, the most important are HDL and LDL. LDL or low-density lipoproteins are the dangerous ones. When LDL levels are high, there is a great risk of them clogging arteries.

So, what is cholesterol? In broader terms it is something we cannot live without but in terms of LDL, it could be something that could kill us. Essentially cholesterol is a building block of the body, it is produced naturally in the liver and we do not need to eat or take any kind of supplements to ensure its production. You liver will produce all the cholesterol you will ever need. Therefore there is nothing you need to eat to produce it. Cut out all LDL cholesterol producing foods and your body will continue to run just fine without them.

Elliptical vs Treadmills: Which One Burns More Calories?

by Torri Tompson

Unfortunately home exercise equipment is never cheap, which means it is really important to invest in the right machine. For effective weight loss, you need to find out which piece of equipment is best at helping to burn up those excess calories.

You’ll hear arguments on both sides of the treadmill versus elliptical debate. Out of all exercise equipment, these two sell the most. Of course, you’ll have to make a personal decision as to which piece of machinery you like best. But if it all boils down to which one burns more calories, then there’s a definitive answer for you.

Both treadmills and ellipticals can help you to burn the same amount of calories, the major factor to bear in mind is how you actually use the machine while you are exercising! Running on a treadmill can deliver the exact same results as a workout on an elliptical, and vice versa.

It is true that running on a treadmill can be more intensive, and can have a greater impact on your body’s muscles and joints. For this reason some people may find it very hard to run on a treadmill. By using an elliptical, you are still able to exercise and burn off the same number of calories, it’s just the exercise has a gentler impact on your body.

If you chose to run on a treadmill at around 7 mph for an hour, your body would use about 783 calories. Use an elliptical trainer, and you should expect to use up about 774 calories - so the numbers are more or less identical. However, if you only walked on the treadmill at 3 mph, your body would burn just 297 calories, which is a massive difference!

However, this isn’t a cut and dry formula. The number of calories you burn on an elliptical trainer can vary. Some people adopt a moderate approach to their workout on the elliptical, while others go at it full force.

You really need to ask yourself which machine you would prefer. Remember, you will only do you exercise if you are motivated and excited, if you find it boring to use a treadmill, you are not likely to keep up to your workout regime. Equally, if an elliptical does not inspire you, then you are better off with a treadmill.

For people who love walking, or running or jogging for that matter, then a treadmill would be an excellent investment which allows you to get all the benefits of walking without having to leave your home. Bear in mind though that to be an effective method of losing weight you will have to increase the speed and incline of the treadmill to make sure you really get the benefits of exercise.

For those that have problems with the knees and ankles, or have experienced joint pain then an elliptical would be perfect for you. Not only does it allow you to burn calories, but ellipticals also have a less harsh impact on your body. They are also ideal for older people because they are much more forgiving to the joints and muscles. Some people even invest in an elliptical and a treadmill so that they can mix up their workout routine ensuring that they get the benefits of both types of machine.

Trampoline Exercises - A Healthy Alternative

by Ned DAgostino

Adults are quickly learning what children have known for many years, that jumping on a trampoline is fun. But many adults are also starting to realize that trampoline exercises are also a great way to get healthy.

If you’ve ever attempted an exercise routine, chances are you quit because it became boring. It’s probably the main reason people don’t stick to them. But since trampolines are so much fun, there’s a better chance you’ll stay with the routine. And you’ll be losing weight and toning your muscles without the aid of a bunch of other exercise equipment.

So how does it work? Well obviously bouncing on a trampoline is a cardiovascular workout. Like running on the streets or on a treadmill, it will increase your heart rate and strengthen a lot of your vital organs. This type of exercise will also increase your metabolism, which in turn, speeds up your efforts to lose weight. And the constant motion on a trampoline will improve your blood flow, give you more endurance, and also help rid your body of many toxins that lead to weight gain and poor health.

And by consistently jumping you’ll be strengthening your leg muscles. Do you want to target your back muscles? Then just jump while keeping your legs straight. Add in arm motions, like swinging them with every jump, and you’ll help tone your arms as well. If you want increased strength you can add ankle weights or hold lightweight hand weights to increase resistance. But a word of caution, only add the additional weight after you are comfortable with your trampoline exercises.

People with back problems often find trampoline exercises helpful. The jumping motion tends to release strain or tension that may be building up. And these exercises are low impact, which means you’re not putting any additional stress on your muscles or joints. If you’ve been jogging but find that the constant pounding is causing pain in your knees, ankles or back, a trampoline is a great substitute. This is even more beneficial if you are just getting back into exercise after a leg injury.

And it’s your body weight being used to tone and strengthen muscles, no additional weight is needed.

We all understand that no matter how old you are, exercise is important. And for seniors, a trampoline is a great way to get a workout if you are no longer capable of fast paced exercises like running. It only takes 20 minutes a day to get good exercise without straining your muscles or bones.

Most people spend some time each night either watching TV or a movie on the DVD player. Use this time to also bounce on a trampoline. Instead of being a couch potato, you’ll be using this time to get rid of some calories, exercise your muscles, and increase your lung capacity. You won’t miss your favorite show, and you’ll be more healthy for watching it.

And because you’ll be having fun, there’s also a better chance you’ll stay with your workout program for a much longer time.

Common Causes Of Bulimia - 6 Possible Causes Of Bulimia

by Samantha Adams

There are many people today who suffer from bulimia nervosa and yet even though many studies have been carried out we are still unable to clearly define what the causes of bulimia are. In fact it may be a combination of a number of different things which result in a person suffering from this particular eating disorder. Below we look at what are considered to be the major contributing causes for bulimia in people today.

Cause 1 - Because we live in a world where the emphasis is constantly being placed on being thin and beautiful it leads a lot of people being dissatisfied with the way that they look. This is especially true for young women who are being constantly bombarded with images that say what they should ideally look like, but which are completely unrealistic.

Cause 2 - Those people today who have very little self esteem are highly susceptible to suffer from bulimia. This low self esteem could have been caused for a variety of reasons but the main ones seem to be they were abused as a child, they suffer from depression or they are trying to be perfect at everything they do.

Cause 3 - People who diet a lot are certainly more prone to developing any kind of eating disorder not just bulimia compared to those people who dont. It is those who use the more drastic sorts of diets which results in them binge eating afterwards. If they use these diets too often they will find themselves getting caught up in the bulimia binge and purge cycle.

Cause 4 - If a person is involved in a certain profession where they need to look a certain way are prone to suffer from eating disorders. How often have stories been told of models, dancers, actors and gymnasts having to fight against eating problems as they need to maintain a certain look if they want to stay at the top of their profession.

Cause 5 - Some people may suffer from bulimia as there have been drastic taking places in their lives recently. It may be that they have moved home or a relationship has come to an end after some considerable time. Such people will suffer from this eating disorder because they feel it helps them to cope far better with the stress they are under.

Cause 6 - For a few people the cause of their bulimia is due to their family genetics. Some studies have been undertaken and these have shown that certain people’s genes are what are causing them to suffer from this particular eating disorder. Also in other research undertaken it was found that the cause for bulimia is some people are because the levels of serotonin in their bodies are low.

Massage is more then just a back rub.

by Bodhi BcLeod, LMT

“Massage is more than just a backrub!” Those were the wise words repeated by my instructor while I was a student in massage therapy school.

In the hands of the right therapist, massage is an effective therapy for carpal tunnel, tendinitis, frozen shoulder and migraine headaches, as well as back, neck and shoulder pain. Scientific studies have shown that massage reduces the symptoms of all these things and more. (Touch Research Institutes)

Furthermore, massage is therapeutic for the mind and spirit as well as the body. It gives relief to those with depression and anxiety and helps those with insomnia get more restful sleep. It’s beneficial to children with ADD and ADHD. (Ibid.)

For pregnant women, massage feels great on those swollen feet and is also healthy. It reduces labor time and complications. It even reduces the risk of birth effects. (Ibid.)

Massage is an alternative and complimentary therapy. Licensing is required but in the state of California, standards vary widely from state to state. Every massage therapist is unique, bringing something different to the table in terms of education, experience, skill and specialization.

Day spas have become popular and employ many great massage therapists. However, there are also many private practitioners who may be better able to suit your needs. Some are mobile and will come to you in your own home or office. Others work out of their homes or have their own private offices.

Private practitioners have dedicated themselves to their practices and are more likely to have an area of expertise. You can find one through many different sources, but one source is the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals at abmp.com. You can search by location and specialty.

No matter who you are, the right therapist for you is out there. With a little time and patience, you will find him or her!

How to Achieve Quick Weight Loss with FatLoss4Idiots

by Joel Riley

Having tried everything, sometimes you will wonder if ever you will ever get to lose any weight at all. With so many ways touted as a good way to lose weight quickly, none of the ways can help you to maintain your weight permanently. This article will show you one way how you can go about achieving weight loss quickly and at the same time get to eat naturally. Best of all, you don’t even have to exercise.

By following a diet pattern called “calorie shifting”, you can get to lose weight quickly. You are not required to skip meals, eat less nor starve yourself. In fact with this method, you have to eat more frequently up to four meals per day. With this diet plan, you will eat foods of varying amounts of calories. Some food which you eat will have high calories while other will have low calories. What you are trying to do essentially is to manipulate your body metabolism rate to burn more fats in a short period of time. When that happens, you will start to lose weight faster. So forget about trying to pass the day with just low calories food.

Look, your metabolic rate depends on your food patterns. Your body anticipates your daily calorie consumption based on the food patterns you have followed over the years. So if you eat less and skip meals, your metabolic rate will slow down and you won’t be able to lose weight. If you try to eat only low-calorie foods then also the same thing will happen - that is, low metabolic rate.

By eating both low and high calories foods, your body will strive to maintain it metabolism rate at a higher rate most of the time. This will results in all the calories being burn away faster and consequently quicker weight loss.

Now,If you bear the principle of “calories shifting” in mind, you can now begin to understand why most conventional diet “works” with only temporary effect. So if you wish to have a plan which have a longer effect then you should try Fatloss4Idiots diet plan which is based on the calories shifting principles. Losing 7 to 10 pounds within 10 days is very possible with this plan and you don’t even need to starve yourself.

This plan doesn’t even requires you to do exercises for it to be effective. All that is required on your part is to just eat a mixture of low and high calories food. However, personally I will still recommend that you do some light exercises so that you can even lose weight faster.

6 Pack Abs In A Fraction Of The Time

by John Alvino

The entire fitness community insists that you must only train your abs at the end of your workout. They state that since the abs contribute greatly to spinal stability, they should never be fatigued prior to performing non ab exercises such as, presses, squats, RDL’s or rowing exercises. Therefore the only option the “experts” give to you is to work your abs at the end of your workouts.

I see their point to a degree but their philosophy is in stark contrast with “The Priority Principle. The Priority Principle simply says that what gets trained first (while in the freshest state) will get the best training effect. The fitness experts agree that this is a powerful principle with every single muscle group…except the abs. Why would this principle be true for every other muscle group in the human body except the abs?

What if your abs are your weakest body part? What if getting six pack abs happens to be your number one priority?

Under these circumstances, you should prioritize your training and work them at the beginning of your workout.

So here is my suggestion: if you want to prioritize your abs, train them at the very beginning of your workout! This slight alteration will make a big difference in your training results. You will have better focus while working them, and you’ll be able to put forth greater effort into each ab exercise.

If you are used to just cranking out a few sets of crunches at the end of your workouts, you will literally double your rate of progress towards carving out ripped abs by using this technique.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, priority abdominal training will also provide you with a great warm up for the rest of your workout. The only exception to this rule is when you are truly training with maximal weights. Doing anything that could have any residual fatigue prior to a maximal weight workout would be undesirable.

Try this exercise sequence and carve out your six pack faster than you thought was possible!

Dairy Allergies: No More Milk!

by Dorothy Medlum

The minute you heard that you have dairy allergies, it was devastating. At least it is for those who love dairy products. Can you even imagine being told that you can’t ever have milk, cheese, or other dairy products that you love? If you do, will you suffer with dairy allergies?

Suffering from dairy products differs from person to person. What makes one person sick with a major migraine may make another person suffer from intestinal pain.

Depending on the severity of your dairy allergy, you should be able to enjoy dairy by following a certain dairy allergy diet and prevention plan.

Dairy Allergy Diet and Prevention Plan

First, you must determine if you are, in fact, allergic to dairy products. Scheduling an appointment with the allergist is the first thing you should do. An allergist will test you to determine your allergies are from dairy and dairy products. They will do this test with small amounts of dairy products to see if you have a reaction.

Usually, your skin will turn red and inflamed, that is a sign of a reaction. At that point, your allergist will provide you with a dairy allergy diet and prevention plan.

Refraining from the dairy products that cause the most discomfort is the most common dairy allergy diet and prevention plan. This differs from person to person. Some may have allergies to milk but have no reaction when they eat ice cream. That would mean that the allergen is in the milk itself. Something in the milk is not in the ice cream.

You allergist may prescribe dairy allergy supplements such as products for those who are lactose intolerant. This may be all the help needed in some cases. Again, it will all depend on the severity of the dairy allergy.

Be sure to talk to your allergist to determine if you have dairy allergies. If you do have them, your doctor will let you know how you can enjoy dairy products, even though you have allergies. Just because you have allergies does not mean you have to give up dairy forever. You can enjoy them without the pain and discomfort. So drink a glass of milk and enjoy!
